Habitat offers seminars for homeowners and wannabes

Habitat for HumanityHow much is too much debt? Are payday loans and pawn shops really that bad? What makes radon gas so deadly and why is it especially a concern for Iowans? Can a family have too much insurance?

Answers to these critical questions and many more will be provided in a free five-part seminar series held every Thursday evening in July sponsored by Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity.

The classes have been developed for those with interest in becoming Habitat homeowners and is a requirement for all families selected to become a Habitat partner family. The general public is also welcome and encouraged to attend, with classes running from 7 to 9 pm.

The series kicks off on Thursday, July 2, at the ISU Extension office in Jefferson, 104 W. Washington Street, with Carolyn Steckelberg of Iowa State University presenting the first session on the critical subject of personal finance.

The following two Thursdays, July 9 and 16, the series moves to the Boone office of Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity, 720 Story Street, where John Roosa, Boone County environmental services officer, will present two sessions on Healthy Homes.

John Nerem of Nerem and Associates will present a session on insurance, home maintenance and real estate on Thursday, July 23, also in the Boone office of Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity

The final presentation will be July 30, with the follow-up session on personal finance with Carolyn Steckelberg of Iowa State University. This will be at the ISU Extension office in Jefferson.

While those wanting to become a Habitat partner family must attend all five sessions, the public is welcome to choose classes and topics that most interest them. No pre-registration is required. Simply show up at the place and time indicated.

 

Homeowner education classes are offered as a community service by Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity and information about becoming a Habitat partner family will be available at the seminar series. Those with questions can call 515-432-1168.
